Licensing FAQ

1. To obtain new software, what should I do?
Most software can be purchased from either the UCI Computer Store or TRC (http://www.gotrc.com/uc). For standard software, such as Microsoft Office, or Adobe Creative Suite, Biological Sciences Computing owns the media, therefore you need to purchase the LICENSE ONLY from either place, and we can do the install for you. This will often save you a considerable amount of money. Please call the help desk, x.4-3555 to check as to whether we have the media available.

2. What if I want a specialized piece of software?
For scientific and specialized software, we recommend that you check NACS' Software license database: http://licenses.nacs.uci.edu/

3. What if I can't find the software I need?
If the software is unavailable through the above resources, please fill out a Product Request Form (http://licenses.nacs.uci.edu/RequestForm.cfm) and help build interest in the software to the point that NACS could obtain a bulk licensing agreement.

4. Is there a place where I can get basic software that the campus already has a license for?
Yes, at the PC and Mac Archive. Software such as Eudora, Absolute FTP and other utilities are available. The PC archive can be accessed here: http://pc-archive.nacs.uci.edu/ArchiveDescriptions/ArchiveDescription.htm and the Mac archive can be accessed here: http://mac-archive.nacs.uci.edu/archive/index.html

5. Since I got the CD in the boxed version of Microsoft Office that I bought, I can install Microsoft Office on all the computers in my lab, right?
Wrong. Please carefully review the software license agreement contained in each software package you purchase. The licenses may differ from one piece of software to the other, therefore it is important to know what you are legally permitted to do and not to do.
